With crews continuing to work around the clock to clean up from last week’s storm that uprooted trees and downed utility lines, schools in New Fairfield are set to reopen on Wednesday after being forced to shutter its doors for five days.

As of 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22, more than a week after the storm struck, 1,244 of Eversource’s 1,270,056 customers remained without power, including 410 in New Fairfield.

Alicia Roy, the New Fairfield Superintendent of Schools said that due to classes being canceled for five days, schools will be forced to be open until the last week of June to meet the state mandate of 180 days of school.

Officials from the school district had previously made a request to the state to be more lenient about the rule, but have been denied. According to reports, the state is encouraging districts to open up schools on the traditional Memorial Day holiday.

“The New Fairfield Schools will be open tomorrow,” she stated. “I do need everyone to exercise extreme caution, as you have been. As I speak crews are finishing the work that needs to be completed so that we can go to school.

“I know that there is much wire and other debris from the storm on the side of the road. Also, the roads are passable, but it may be difficult to get the bus through along with cars. Please be patient. Due to our being out of school for the past five days, as of the sending of this message, schools will be in session the last week of June.”
