WESTPORT, Conn. --  A Bridgeport man was arrested in Westport after police said he tried to ditch some marijuana during a search.

An officer observed a broken down car in the parking lot of McDonald's on Post Road East at around 8 p.m. Sunday. The car was in a main corridor and blocking traffic, so the officer got out to help, police said.  When he reached the car, the officer detected the strong odor of marijuana, according to police.

The officer asked the owner of the car, 52-year-old Frederick Anim of Bridgeport, if he could search the car and Anim consented, according to police. During the search, police said that Anim turned to his right to block his left side hip from the officer and used his left hand to reach down to the side of his shorts. He then struggled with officers as they tried to handcuff him, police said.

Anim was taken to the ground and handcuffed, police said. According to police, he tried to discard a clear plastic baggie containing marijuana onto the pavement.

Police used K-9 Koda to search the car for more drugs, and found a second small bagggie of marijuana and a rolled joint int he center console, police said. They also found a third small baggie inside a white takeout bag, police said. The total marijuana weighed 7.8 grams, according to police.

Anim was charged with interfering with an officer, possession of less than a half-ounce of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was held on a $500 bond and given a court date of April 25.
