The crash occurred around 8 p.m. Friday when Douglas Alqueza of East Lyme was traveling northbound on I-95 near Old Lyme when he hit a set of flares set out by the trooper and then slammed into the back of the cruiser, said the Connecticut State Police.

The trooper, who was not injured, had set out a flare pattern and was waiting with a driver for a tow truck when Alqueza drove into the vehicle, state police said.

Alqueza, who failed field sobriety tests, admitted to drinking at least three beers, state police said.

He was charged with driving under the influence and failure to drive in proper lane. He was released on $500 bond and is set to appear in court on Aug. 23.
