Bones found on top of gravesites at a historic cemetery in Stamford are most likely human, Stamford Police said.

Detectives don't suspect foul play, but they do suspect a groundhog or woodchuck is the culprit, said Capt. Richard Conklin.

The bones and teeth were found by a passerby who happened to notice the remains on top of several gravesites, Conklin said.

Police believe the bones are human and have collected them and plan to work with the Medical Examiner to find out what kind they are, Conklin said.

"We want to treat them respectfully and return them to where they belong," Conklin said,

They believe the bones were dragged from the sites by the animals because of the series of tunnels near the sites.

"That type of burrowing is common in woodchucks," he said.

The cemetery, which is located at 971 Hope St., has been in that location for many years, Conklin added.
