The one-car accident happened at about 2:30 a.m., and the Westport Fire Department responded with Westport Police and EMS. Officers found a Volvo C70 convertible with four occupants had struck a tree on the driver’s side and come to rest just beside the roadway, the fire department said.

The driver had to be extricated from the car using hydraulic rescue tools to remove the driver’s side door, police said. He was placed on a backboard for transport to Norwalk Hospital with moderate injuries, the fire department said.
The scene was cleared by 3:30 a.m. The cause of the crash remained under investigation by the Westport Police Department.
