A teenager using counterfeit $100 bills was busted in New Canaan, police said.

The New Canaan Police Department said that an investigation into counterfeit bills used at an Elm Street retail location led to the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect, whose name has not been released due to his age.

Police said that on Jan. 5, officers from the department were dispatched to the Elm Street store regarding an attempt by a teenager, who attempted to pass the counterfeit bill, before a store clerk used a pen and determined that it looked fake.

After being denied the purchase, police said that the teen took the bill and left the store. Through a joint investigation between the New Canaan Police Investigative Unit, Westchester County Police and detectives in Ridgefield, the teen was identified, an arrest warrant was filed and he surrendered himself to police custody on Monday.

The teenager was charged with first-degree forgery. He was scheduled to be arraigned on Monday afternoon. Police said the investigation into the counterfeit bills is ongoing, and additional charges or arrests could be announced.
