Staples High School art students Moira Margolis and Anna Violette have won first and second prize respectively in the awards that were on display at an April 27 ceremony at City Lights Gallery in Bridgeport. U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (Conn.-4) held the ceremony to announce the year’s winners.

"Moira, who won not only the Grand prize but Best in Show for her stippled drawing, will have her piece displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year alongside winning entries from across the country and will be invited to attend the opening ceremonies in Washington, DC in June," representatives said in a press release. "Anna‘s artwork won the Best in Mixed Media prize and will have her work displayed in Himes' congressional offices in Bridgeport."

The achievements mark the third time Staples art students have been awarded both first and second prizes in this district competition and the eighth occurrence of their winning first place in the last decade, school officials said.

"Both pieces were created in the Honors Studio Art class in the last year, a course that includes a complex observational drawing as well as a unit for interpretative work of a given theme. Moira’s meticulously executed ink drawing depicted a humorous scene of dinosaurs feasting at a breakfast table, and Anna’s silkscreen & digital creation interpreted Canto 33 of Dante’s Inferno," representatives said in the release.
