FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- It may be beyond Fairfield County on the New Haven Line, but the new train station opening soon in West Haven may offer some relief on the crowded commuter rail.

The process of purchasing parking permits for the new West Haven rail station will start the week of July 15, the Connecticut Department of Transportation announced. The West Haven Station parking lot will accommodate 658 vehicles.

Opening day for the West Haven station is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 18. Details of the opening and a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be announced at a future date. Rail commuters will be allowed to use the West Haven station parking lot for free until Sept. 1.

The new parking permits for the West Haven Station will be valid from Sept. 1 through Feb. 28, costing $300 for the six-month period. All parking permits are set to expire on the same date and can be renewed on a semiannual date. The cost of permits sold after Sept 1, as well as after future renewal dates, will be prorated. For passengers without a permit, the parking rate is $6 per day.

“The opening of West Haven Station is an exciting opportunity for us to help alleviate traffic congestion along the busy Interstate 95 corridor,” DOT Commissioner James Redeker said. “This long-anticipated station will serve the needs of residents and businesses in the community of West Haven.”
