Lines Go Out The Door For Freak Sundae At Bethel's Cream & Sugar Cafe

BETHEL, Conn. — The colder temperatures Friday afternoon didn’t stop over a dozen people from enjoying the hottest new items — giant ice cream sundaes and milkshakes — at Cream & Sugar Cafe in Bethel.

Taylor Alves and Allie Johnstone, students at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, were sharing a Freak Shake, which is a new item on the menu along with the Freak Sundae .

The Freak Shake is about a foot tall, contains a rainbow of ice cream flavors, and is topped with glitter, ribbons, lollipops and even a necklace — well, a candy necklace, that is.

It was their first time at the Bethel ice cream shop, which is celebrating its one-year anniversary.

Alves called the ice cream concoction “a beautiful work of art" — but that didn’t stop her from eagerly digging into it.

“It's messy, but it's good,” said Alves, as she tried with her spoon to prevent the tower of ice cream from toppling over.

There is usually a line out the door starting at about 2 p.m. and lasting through closing time, said Alec Morrone, who works at Cream & Sugar.

“It’s about an hour's wait to get served,” he said. “There are people waiting outside every day before we open, too.”

Owner Alyce Kallman is planning to offer a delivery service soon, sending the ice cream off to homes in thermal bags.

Another big thing is debuting soon — jumbo ice cream sandwiches made of chocolate chip cookies with large scoops of different ice cream flavors in the middle.

Danielle Joy and Camila Ferreira of Waterbury and Kirsten Reardon of Naugatuck were also sharing a freak sundae -- or what Ferriera called “a sugar rush.”

Their creation included gummy worms, cotton candy, M&Ms and a chocolate chip cookie.

“This is unbelievable. It cures your sweet tooth," Joy said.

The ice cream was their treat after a big workout at Planet Fitness. "This is our lunch," she said.

Before taking over ownership of Cream & Sugar Cafe, which was previously called Square Creamery, Kallman had worked as a beautician.

"I have a 7-year-old, and I wanted to work in a kid-friendly place where my daughter can be with me,” said Kallman, a Newtown resident.

Aside from its 36 flavors of ice cream, the cafe also sells coffee, tea, crepes, candy and pastries.
