First Edition Kerouac, Carle Among 'Specials' At Pequot Library Pre-Sale

SOUTHPORT, Conn. – Pequot Library is gearing up for its 56th Annual Summer Book Sale starting Friday, July 22, but before the sale begins, the public has an opportunity to purchase up to three "Specials" in advance of the sale, at a premium of 25 percent above the catalog price.

The "Specials" online catalog is currently available for review. The advance sale will field requests in order of submission at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, July 17. Viewing items is by appointment only; email booksale@pequotlibrary.org to schedule an appointment. 

Books in the online catalog range from those printed in 1754 to books in published in 2012. Items include very scarce titles, plus books of interest for collectors of vintage children’s books, military history, first editions, biographies, Vaudeville and leather-bound volume sets. Of note in the online catalog are:

  • “Sand County Almanac” by Aldo Leopold, 1949. One of the most widely read and influential books on conservation of the 20th century. It is a first edition with original dust jacket.
  • “Secret Birthday Message” by Eric Carle, 1972. Carle, best known as the author of “The Hungry Caterpillar,” is an iconic author and illustrator of children's books and founder of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. His original illustrations and artwork in any form are extremely scarce. This is a first edition with a full-page illustration on the first endpage.
  • “Dharma Bums” by Jack Kerouac, 1958. This first edition of Kerouac's autobiographical novel is based upon his experiences in the mid 1950s and is in its original dust jacket.
  • “My Experiences in the World War” by General John J. Pershing, 1931. This is a two-volume, limited/numbered set in original slipcase, signed by the leader of American forces in World War II.

Pequot Library’s 56th Annual Summer Book Sale runs from Friday, July 22 to Tuesday, July 26. There will be over 140,000 books to choose from in over 60 categories, plus CDs, DVDs, records and rare and collectible unique books. Admission is free and open to the public.
