Howling Winds Will Bring Big Chills, Possible Power Outages To Westport

updated at 1 p.m.: FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Slick roads from Sunday's icy storm led to widespread school delays and dangerous conditions for anyone driving, pedaling or walking in Fairfield County on Monday morning. And large power outages were being reported.

The strong winds are blowing snow and ice from trees — and could bring down branches or power lines — across Fairfield County. There are reported outages in some areas Monday morning.

There's no reprieve in sight. The gusting and howling winds will continue to blow around piled snow from rooftops, tree branches, and other ice-coated items, and will be strongest Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

That's when the county is expected to experience winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. A Wind Advisory will remain in effect until  6 p.m. Monday evening, the Weather Service said.

The force of these winds could knock down trees and branches and cause power outages.

A Wind Advisory is issued when sustained winds of 31 to 39 miles per hour or gusts of 56 to 57 miles per hour are predicted.

Strong winds like this make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles, so use extra caution, the Weather Service advises.

Monday's chance of more snow is only 20 percent, then it will be partly sunny all day, with a steady temperature just above freezing at 34, though wind chills will make it feel 20 to 25.

Clouds will roll in Monday night and mercury will drop to 19. Wind force will be less but still from 8 to 17 mph, and likely gusts up to 38.

Tuesday arrives sunny with a high near 36 and wind chills still very low, making it feel like 10 to 20 degrees. Winds will have died down by morning.

More snow showers could possibly come near dawn, then Tuesday night will be cloudy and 27 degrees.

Wednesday morning brings the slight chance of snow, then rain around mid-morning to the afternoon, when later it will be partly sunny and in the 40s.
