UPDATE : Water service has been restored to customers, but the roadway still needs to be repaired in the area of North Avenue and Park Avenue in Bridgeport.
original story: BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A large water main break was continuing to cause big headaches at a major intersection in Bridgeport on Tuesday morning.
North Avenue/Route 1 is closed in both directions at Park Avenue because of the water main break, which was first reported Monday at about 6:30 p.m., according to the Department of Transportation.
All traffic is being detoured away from the area, and drivers are urged to avoid the area.
A large hole about 25 feet wide and a dozen feet deep has been dug for workers, with.about 100 feet of roadway torn up, according to the Connecticut Post.
The nearby Geraldine Johnson Elementary School was closed Tuesday because there was no water service in the building.
The water main break was affecting about 100 customers on Park Avenue, from North to Benham avenues, and on North Avenue from Clinton to Lexington avenues, the Post said.
Aquarion’s estimated restoration time is between 9 and 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Mayor Joe Gamin said anyone in affected area that needs drinking water can get from Aquarion by calling 203-337-5991.
It was not clear when the repairs would be done and when the roadway would be reopened.
