Fallen Tree, Wires Close Newtown Turnpike/Route 53 In Weston

WESTON, Conn. — You may need to find a different route home: Newtown Turnpike/Route 53 is closed to all traffic until at least 9 p.m. Tuesday due to a fallen tree, according to the Weston Volunteer Fire Department.

The downed tree and wires are between Godfrey Road and Valley Forge Road, according to the WVFD. A tree fell completely across Newtown Turnpike and heavily damaged four utility poles, the WVFD said. 

The road will be closed until at least 9 p.m. Tuesday, impacting the rush-hour traffic, according to Eversource. 

The town highway has put up detour signs to help motorists around the area, Weston Volunteer Fire Department said.

The Weston Police Department and Weston Volunteer Fire Department are on the scene with Eversource and the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
