WESTPORT, Conn. The Yankees won the Westport Little League Majors division championship with a 14-8 extra inning win Saturday against the Red Sox.
The Yankees rallied from behind twice in the slug fest before taking the lead for good in the top of the seventh. The Yankees got terrific relief pitching from winning pitcher Adam Feuer and closer Cayne Mandell. Zack Bloom and Jack Lieder had big hits and Matty Fair socked a grand slam to help the Yankees beat the top-seeded Red Sox.
The Yankees went 10-5 during the regular season and posted a 5-1 record in the playoffs. The team won 11 of its last 13 games. The Red Sox went 13-2 during the regular season before losing twice in the season-ending tournament, both times to the Yankees.
"This was a great group of boys that grew together as a team and as players throughout the season," Yankees' manager Scott Bloom said. "They showed tremendous determination and resilience continuously battling and never showing any sign of quit. It was a privilege having the opportunity be on the field with them this season."
Team members included Cayne Mandell, Grant Ballesteros, Jack Lieder, Will Casey, Zack Bloom, Adam Feuer, Skyler Celotto, Steven Niver, Griffin Lundquist, Matty Fair, Matt Feuer, Scott Bloom, Mike Lieder and Thomas Nealon.
