The Staples High School baseball team stayed unbeaten in 2011 with yet another convincing win. This time Westhill was the victim of a five-run first inning. The Vikings were knocked down when the game had barely begun, and Staples came out on top, 8-2.
The Wreckers had no problem figuring out the fluttering knuckleball of Westhill starter Jesse Koretz in the first inning. Tyler Jacobs drove in leadoff man Ben Lipper to promptly stake out a 1-0 lead. Three batters later, Brian Terzian smashed a ground-rule double to plate two more runs. A bases loaded walk and an RBI groundout later, Staples held a 5-0 lead.
That was more than enough for starter Rob Gau, who improved to 2-0 on the season. Gau gave up two runs on just three hits in five innings pitched. He struck out five and walked five but was helped by two double plays. Jim Kopack pitched perfect sixth and seventh innings to pick up the save in relief.
Jacobs crushed an absolute bomb to dead center for a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. He finished three-for-four while Lipper went two-for-four.
Staples remains unbeaten through seven games and is 5-0 in conference play.
