Westport Swimmers Lead Wahoos To State Championship

WILTON, Conn. -- Over 60 swimmers from the Wilton Y Wahoos competed in the 2014 Connecticut Senior Long Course Championship at Wesleyan University.

The Wahoos took top honors in the men’s, women’s and combined team categories at the Connecticut Senior Long Course championships.

The Wahoos took top honors in the men’s, women’s and combined team categories with a total of 1,388 points.

Over the four-day meet, 16 Connecticut state records and three Wahoo team records were set.  

Verity Abel, of Westport, was the female distance high point winner. Ian Rainey, also of Westport, was the male distance and overall high point winner.

The men’s 800-meter freestyle relay broke the Connecticut State Record with a time of 7:53.19.  The members of that relay were Tommy Kealy and Stephen Holmquist of Wilton, Max Dolan of Southbury and Ian Rainey. The previous record was 7:53.66.  

Ky-lee Perry of Norwalk set a Wilton Y Wahoo team record in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.07. The previous record of 26.65 was set in 1987.

Ian Rainey also set two Wahoo team records. In the 400-meter freestyle he broke his own record of 4:00.24 with a new time of 4:00.18 and in the 1,500-meter freestyle he set a new record of 15:41.66, breaking the previous record of 15:45.89.

Katrina Trentos and Brooke Hendee of Wilton both achieved time cuts for the YMCA National Long Course Championship meet. Hendee will be attending the meet in Indianapolis.

In total, 15 swimmers from Wilton competed in the meet.

In the women’s division, those that finished in the top 24 included Courtney Gilroy placing 7th in the 200-meter breaststroke, 12th in the 400-meter IM and 19th in the 100-meter breaststroke; Emma Holmquist finishing 4th in the 200-meter breaststroke, 9th in the 400-meter IM and 100-meter breaststroke, 11th in the 200-meter IM and 18th in the 200-meter freestyle; Maggie Kauffeld placing 12th in the 200-meter butterfly; Emma Kauffeld finishing 8th in the 800-meter and 1500-meter freestyle and 15th in the 400-meter freestyle; Natalie Larsen placing 24th in the 200-meter butterfly; Julia Lewis finishing 23rd in the 400-meter IM; and Katrina Trentos placing 15th in the 200-meter backstroke and 22nd in the 800-meter freestyle.  NoraNoel Nolan also participated in the meet.

In the men’s division, Robby Giller placed 6th in the 800-meter freestyle, 10th in the 400-meter freestyle, 16th in the 400-meter IM, 21st in the 200-meter butterfly and 23rd in the 200-meter IM and 200-meter freestyle; Stephen Holmquist placed 1st in the 200-meter IM, 2nd in the 200-meter breaststroke, 3rd in the 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle, 5th in the 200-meter freestyle, 14th in the 200-meter butterfly and 17th in the 100-meter breaststroke; Tommy Kealy placed 2nd in the 100-meter butterfly, 9th in the 50-meter freestyle and 10th in the 200-meter butterfly; Bobby McDowell placed 15th in the 100-meter backstroke and 20th in the 200-meter backstroke.  Other participants from Wilton included Jake Kealy and Jack Lewis.

Thirty-five members of the Wilton Y Wahoos are attending the YMCA National Long Course Championship in Indianapolis.  

Stephen Holmquist and Ian Rainey will be attending the Speedo Junior National Championships in Irvine, Calif., beginning July 30.
