Westport's U10 Softball Team Wins Twice At Regional Tournament

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport’s 10-and-under softball All-Stars rode the pitching of Morgan Carnahan and Grace Alfero to consecutive victories in the New England pool lf the East Regional Little League Tournament in Back Mountain, Pa.

On Sunday, Carnahan pitched a one-hitter in Westport’s 1-0 win over Rhode Island. On Monday, Westport struck for five runs in the seventh inning en route to an 8-3 win over Maine.

Westport plays its final pool game against New England competition on Wednesday. Westport seems likely to have already secured a semifinal berth. All of the other New England teams have at least one loss. Vermont is 0-1, Rhode Island is 1-1 and Maine is 1-2. 

In Monday’s victory, Westport scored two runs in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead, but Maine fought back to tie it in the bottom of the inning. Westport pulled ahead for good in the seventh. Ava and Freya Harvey singled to open the inning, and came around to score. Alex Hackett, Olivia Stubbs and Carnahan also scored in the inning. Alfero delivered an RBI triple. Alfero pitched seven innings and struck out 10. She also had a single. Carnahan had three hits and Stubbs struck for two hits.

In Saturday’s win, Carnahan struck out 15. Ava Harvey’s RBI single scored Carnahan with the eventual winning run in the top of the seventh.

The top two teams from New England meet in Thursday's semifinals. The winner advances to the East Regional championship game on Friday against the winner of the Mid-Atlantic Region.
