The meet is the equivalent of the men’s NCAA Championships. Perkins, a senior, rowed on the Men’s Varsity 8+.  The Huskies became the first program to win five consecutive Intercollegiate Rowing Association men's varsity eight national titles,

The Huskies won the varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight, freshman eight and varsity four, marking the team's third five-race sweep in the last four years (the UW also did it in 2012 and 2013).

No other program has ever accomplished a five-race sweep in the history of the IRA Regatta, which was first run in 1895. Including heats and semifinals, Washington won 14 out of 14 races at the IRAs.

Washington won the James Ten Eyck Trophy, given to the overall points champion, for an unprecedented ninth straight year. The Ten Eyck, first awarded in 1952, has been won by the Huskies a total of 12 times, including every year since 2007.

Perkins attended Kent School and rowed for the Kent School Boat Club. He is the son of Richard Perkins and Kathryn Van der Kloot. He rowed as the team's stroke, the rower closest to the coxswain and perhaps the most valuable member on the team.

Last year, Perkins competed on the Second Men’s Varsity 8+ for the Huskies at the IRA Championships. He also competed for the United States in the World Under 23 Championships last summer in Italy.

Perkins joins Sami Jurofsky of Westport as a national champion in rowing. Jurofsky was the coxswain for Ohio State on its first Varsity 8+ team which won the national title. The Buckeyes also won the team title.
