Breaking News: Fairfield County Woman, 40, Sentenced To Prison For Two Fraud Schemes

Westport's 11-Year-Old All-Stars Survive Rocky Start

WESTPORT, Conn. – After losing its first game in the District 2 Little League tournament to Fairfield National, Westport knew it had little margin for error the rest of the way in the 11-year-old tournament. The young ballplayers didn’t miss a beat thereafter.

Westport wrapped up pool play Thursday with a 1-0 win over Trumbull American behind the combined no-hit pitching of Harry Azadian and Chris Drbal. Westport gets a rematch with Fairfield National on Saturday at Unity Park for the district championship. The winner advances to the Section 1 tournament that begins next week in Naugatuck.

“Losing that first game made it tough,’’ manager Tim Rogers said. “That first loss left us little room for error. We had to play perfect from then on, and we were.”

Westport allowed just 15 runs in six games in pool play. Fairfield National, however, has allowed only four after Thursday’s 10-0 win over Monroe. In its meeting in pool play, Fairfield National scored five runs in the second inning after taking advantage of two Westport errors and went on to a 5-2 win.

“We weren’t surprised — we knew they were a good team,’’ Rogers said. “They put in our place pretty quickly.

Westport also survived a tough test against Trumbull National in its next game. “We were down 3-0 in what felt like 30 seconds,’’ Rogers said. Westport rallied for a 4-3 win and also pulled out a 2-1 win over Fairfield American. Fairfield National and Westport had berths in the finals sewed up before Thursday’s games.

Westport’s 10-year-old All-Stars were eliminated after going 3-1 in pool play, and the 12-year-old All-Stars were ousted after finishing 2-2. “We’re proud to be representing the town,’’ Rogers said. “They work hard, they have fun and they play with great sportsmanship. We’ve had to overcome adversity along the way, but they were up to the challenge.”
