Bob Davis' has dedicated a large portion of his life to baseball. The 82-year-old has been a fixture behind the plate for 42 years as a volunteer Little League and Babe Ruth League umpire, and he has no plans of stopping. His longevity and commitment to youth baseball has led to his being named the Westport Sports Person of the Year by the Fairfield County Sports Commission .
Davis looks at his umpiring duties as community service, a chance to give back to the kids playing baseball, as well as helping them learn the rules of the game. Davis also has worked games in Wilton, Fairfield and Stamford, but his home base has been his hometown of Westport.
His experience spans generations as coaches often tell their young players about memories of the elder umpire. Davis says he wants to continue umpiring until he is 85.
He will be honored along with award-winners from every other Fairfield County town on Monday, October 18 at the annual SportsNight. The event will be held at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. Limited tickets remain and can be purchased at the FCSC website . For further information, contact Tom Chiappetta by email or at 203-251-8481.
