Westport Vaulter Takes 4th at Junior Olympics

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport's Lexie Schachne finished fourth last week in the pole vault at the U.S.A. Track and Field Junior Olympic championships in Wichita, Kan.

Schachne cleared 12 feet, 1 ½ inches to earn All-America honors in the event. The field included 38 athletes. Competitors battled brutal conditions, including 100-degree heat. The competition was delayed for an hour due to lightning.

The meet was the final competition of the season for Schachne, a senior at Staples High School who earlier this year set indoor and outdoor school records. Lexie is also soliciting support for a fellow pole vaulter, Mariah Sanders, of Joplin, Mo. Sanders' family lost their home in a tornado in May. Readers can help Schachne support Sanders and Joplin High School through WePay , a website she has established.
