Westport Teams Tip Off In Youth Basketball League

WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport teams sponsored by the Police Athletic League tipped off in the Fairfield County Basketball League last weekend.

The fifth-grade girls' team edged St. Mary’s, 24-19, Easton, 21-14, and Danbury, 27-12. The girls are coached by Karen Puskas and visit Ridgefield and Monroe this weekend.

The fifth-grade boys' beat St. Theresa’s of Trumbull, 39-31, in its opener. Westport plays Shelton and the Westport YMCA this weekend.

The sixth-grade boys' team dropped a 39-38 decision to Madison in its opening game. Westport, coached by veteran Shuan Malone, plays Newtown and Greenwich this weekend.

The sixth-grade girls' team, coached by Johanna McNelis and Andrew Lipman, begin their season Saturday against Darien.

Chris Scholz, another long-time coach in the Westport PAL, has a formidable seventh-grade girls' team. After beating Trumbull in the opener, 33-25, Westport fell to Bethel, 56=50.

The Westport seventh-grade boys' team played in the Joe Coppo Memorial Tournament and lost four close games. Coaches Vinnie Rissolo and Andrew Strauss believe the team will show quick improvement in the weeks ahead.

The eighth-grade boys' team also played in the Coppo Tournament and went 2-2. Westport beat Wakeman, 51-33, behind 15 points by Ben Casparius; Sean Pritchett added nine. Casparius scored 20 points and Ben Seideman added nine in a 51-33 win versus New Canaan.

Pritchett scored 15 in a 39-37 loss to Darien, and New Canaan hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to pull out a 48-46 victory. Seideman scored 29 points and Pritchett had a big game on the boards for Westport. Mack Muller, Kenny Brill, Matty Fair, Ryan Fitton, Brendan Massoud, Fritz Schemel, Joshua Berman and Jesse Levinson also played well.
