Westport Swimmers Help Wilton Wahoos Win State Title

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Swimmers from Westport helped the Wilton Y Wahoos win the Connecticut Senior Open swim championship in a meet last weekend at Wesleyan University in Middletown.

The Wahoos took top honors in the men's, women's and combined team categories, with a total of 1,525 points.

Over the four-day meet, many records were broken and numerous cut times were achieved. Max Dolan, of Southbury, was the male high point winner and Ian Rainey, of Westport, was the male distance high point winner.

The women's 800-yard freestyle relay broke the State Record with a time of 7:36.13. The members of that relay were Verity Abel (Westport), Emma Holmquist (Wilton), Samantha Cheruk (Stamford) and Ky-lee Perry (Norwalk). The previous record of 7:36.50 was set in 1997.

Winter Junior National time cuts were achieved by Westport's Verity Abel in the 400-yard IM and the 1000-yard IM and by Ian Rainey in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard and 400-yard IM, the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard backstroke.

Rainey also achieved one time cut in the 200-yard backstroke for the Summer Junior National meet. Rainey took first in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard backstroke, second in the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard and 400-yard IM and 1000-yard freestyle and tenth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Abel also reached a new YMCA National time cut in the 100-yard butterfly, in which she placed third. Verity's other finishes throughout the weekend included first in the 1000-yard freestyle, second in the 500-yard freestyle and 400-yard individual medley, third in the 200-yard IM, fourth in the 200-yard backstroke and fifth in the 100-yard backstroke.

Connor Rainey also participated in the meet. He achieved the YMCA National cut time in the 100-yard backstroke, where he placed 21st. In addition, he placed 12th in the 200-yard backstroke and 26th in the 500-yard freestyle.

Mira Patel finished in 23rd place in the 200-yard breaststroke. Simon Ginsburg and Gabbie LeBlanc, also from Westport, also participated in the meet.

The Wahoos men's 800-yard freestyle relay also set a new state record with a time of 6:55.17, breaking the record set in 1975 of 6:57.49. Members of that relay were Stephen Holmquist (Wilton), Ed Stolarski (Weston), Max Dolan and Ian Rainey.

In addition, two Wahoo team records were broken. Abel broke the 400-yard IM record with a time of 4:18.34.  Janel Jorgensen, a 1988 Olympian, set the previous record of 4:18.79. Max Dolan set a new record of 49.72 in the 100-yard butterfly, breaking the old record of 49.83 set in 1994.

Stephen Holmquist, of Wilton, set a new Wesleyan pool record in the 400-yard IM with a time of 3:54.75, breaking the old record of 3:57.19.
