The Westport PAL seventh-grade boys basketball team can be a handful for opponents inside or outside. That was the case during the Norwalk Girls Basketball Association Holiday Tournament, which Westport won Sunday with a 55-40 triumph over Shelton in the championship game at Ben Franklin School.
"It gives us more balance if we can score inside and outside as we go into the rest of the season,'' Westport coach Shuan Malone said. "We can be a pretty tough team to defend."
Adam Friedman scored 18 points, including 12 in the second half, and Westport connected on 10 3-pointers to pull away from Shelton. Friedman drilled six 3-pointers, including consecutive bombs about 20 seconds apart early in third quarter to help Westport pull away after leading 22-17 at halftime.
Dylan Dreyfus (eight points), Graham Gudis (seven points) and Noah Staffa (five points) also connected on 3-pointers. Ryan Angerthal added eight points and Jackson Ward scored six, all in the second half, as Westport displayed a balanced attack.
"A lot of our offense goes through our guards, but it's the way we run our offense,'' said Malone, whose team beat Shelton earlier in the tournament, 52-48. "Everybody on the team knows their roles."
Westport is 5-4 on the season, with several tough losses in the Fairfield County Basketball League . It dropped a five-point game to Fairfield PAL Hoyas, and a two-point non-league contest against Ridgefield. It has beaten Stamford and the Norwalk Carver Center. Westport resumes league play this weekend with games against Greenwich and the Fairfield PAL Mustangs.
Other team members include Jared Vishno, Daniel Brill, Connor Chamberlain and John Fincher.
