The Westport PAL sixth-grade boys rallied behind a strong defense and hot second-half shooting to beat New Canaan Black, 52-40, Saturday and win the Fairfield County Basketball League A Division. The game was played at Darien High School.
New Canaan jumped out to an early lead and led the entire first half. NC's largest lead was eight points before Westport rallied in the final minutes to close to within three by halftime at 20-17. A strong third quarter by Westport, in which it outscored New Canaan 20-9, put them up for good heading into the final quarter, where the team maintained the lead to win going away.
Westport was led by Ben Casparius, who finished with 13 points (11 in the second half) and 12 rebounds. Fritz Schemel added nine points and Mack Muller contributed six points and six rebounds. Tyler Sweeney played well for New Canaan, leading the way with 16 points.
Westport finished its championship season with a record of 19-4.
