All it took in a neck-and-neck game was one bad quarter to sink the Westport PAL fifth-grade boys. Stamford opened the second half on a 10-0 run, giving it the breathing room it needed to defeat Westport PAL in the Fairfield County Basketball League "B" Division Championship, 45-37.
Westport and Stamford traded shot after shot in the first two quarters. Westport held a three-point lead after the first and trailed by two at the half. Stamford's Jahmani Thornton scored all 14 of his points in the third to pull away from Westport. A 14-point fourth quarter was not enough by then, but Westport finished strong.
Ben Pearl led Westport with 10 points, Drew Rogers contributed eight and Will Birch added six.
The Westport PAL fifth-graders finish their season at 9-15.
