WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport PAL fifth-grade girls basketball split a pair of games in the Fairfield County Basketball League over the weekend, including an overtime loss to undefeated St. Mary's of Ridgefield and a victory over Wilton.
St. Mary's won 24-21 in Saturday's thriller. Westport trailed 14-3 before rallying to force overtime. In rallying from the double-digit deficit, Westport was sparked by the offense of Kayla Zaritsky, Emma Lipman and Elle Fair and the defense, led by Claudia Robinson, Madison Phelps and Ashley Wright. Sydney Panzer and Kate Rutter forced several turnovers that resulted in Westport baskets.
In overtime, Gabby Bromberg won the tip, but St. Mary's inched ahead in the final minutes.
In the other game, Westport beat Wilton, 25-16. Wilton stayed close for three quarters before Westport put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. Catherine Sprouls, Zaritsky and Fair led the offense, with great passing by Lipman, Madison Phelps and Alexandra Sprouls. Defensively, Panzer, Wright, Gabby Bromberg and Robinson shut down Wilton.
The team is coached by Andy Lipman and Johan McNeils and takes a 7-6 record into the weekend. It is 4-2 in the league and stands in third place. Westport travels to meet Shelton on Saturday and hosts Newtown on Sunday.
