Westport Girls Capture 11-Year-Old State Championship

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport’s 11-year-old All-Stars rolled through the competition to capture the state Little League championship, including a 7-6 walk-off win over Union City in the final game.

Westport, led by manager Neil Gabriele, finished the state tournament 3-0. It also went 3-0 in the District 2 tournament to earn the right to play against the best teams from around the state.

In the state championship win, Westport trailed 6-4 heading into its last at-bat in the sixth inning. Eva Vincini’s RBI double tied the game, and she raced home with the winning run on an error on a ball hit by Lauren Hassel. Natasha Taubenheim got the victory, striking out 10 batters.

Westport swept Fairfield in three games to win the District title. In the state tournament, Westport routed Torrington, 11-1, in its first game and came back to beat Union City, 9-5. Union City stayed alive with a 10-0 win over Bristol to set up the rematch.

Westport’s players are Mishael Gill, Natasha Taubenheim, Lauren Hassell, Ava Vincini, Annie Gabriele, Maddie Hill, Ally Currier, Tori Emmert, Katie Gabriele, Lucy Zuckerman and Abbie Millman . Eric Emmert and Steve Vincini are coaches.

Several players on the team were also members of last year's 10-year-old state champions.
