WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport-based fitness studio and cylcling studio Sherpa is seeking young cyclists for its Junior Development Team.
Riders ages 12-17 will train and ride with experienced cyclists from Sherpa. The group will begin with weekly rides during the spring, with more frequent training during the summer. Currently all training and instruction is being conducted in the indoor cycling center. The program is similar to a Junior Development Team for young runners already at Sherpa.
“When I was a young cyclist, I found it was always helpful to have some of the experienced, older guys guide the process,’’ said Jean Paul Desrosiers, Sherpa’s owner and former professional cyclist. “For junior cyclists who want to be a part of it, it’s a great way to start the process. It is a way to give back to kids. If they want to be competitive, that’s great, but we also want to grow the sport of cycling.”
Children interested in the program should have their own bike and safety equipment. Coaches will work with them on training programs, racing strategies, safety and minor equipment maintenance.
“We cannot wait to get started,’’ Desrosiers said. “Cycling is a great lifetime fitness sport that is terrific exercise for people of all ages. Riders who join our team will acquire skills that will enjoy the sport for many years to come.”
