WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport seventh-grade North football team looked to be on the comeback trail early in the third quarter of Saturday's game against New Canaan. One play turned the momentum back to New Canaan, and Westport lost its season opener, 27-14, in the Fairfield County Football League.
New Canaan jumped out to a 14-0 halftime lead. Westport took its first possession in the third quarter and marched in for a touchdown. Brendan Massoud hauled in a 10-yard scoring pass from Andrew Speed, who also ran in for the conversion to get Westport within a touchdown.
Just a few plays later, New Canaan answered. Graham Braden, who earlier scored on a 16-yard run around the left side, ran the same play for a 62-yard touchdown. The long run put New Canaan back in control.
"Our team gave a great effort,'' Westport coach Ron Marsilio said. "We have 56 kids between two teams, and 18 of them have never played football. The kids really stepped up. I couldn't ask anything more from them."
After New Canaan scored late in the fourth to put the game out of reach, Westport scored on the final drive. A nice run by Tripp Backus put Westport in business deep inside New Canaan territory. A few plays later, Speed ran in from 2 yards out.
"I'm pleased with every kid on the roster,'' Marsilio said. "New Canaan's a good team, and we played them hard. I think they'll have a great season."
