WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport Police Athletic League seventh-grade girls basketball team rallied in the final two minutes Saturday to win the B bracket of the Fairfield County Basketball League tournament with a 34-31 win over the Fairfield Mercury.
Claire Meehan scored the final four points and had eight overall for Westport, which finishes the season 14-10. Olivia Troy had 10 for the winners, all of them coming in the second half.
It has been a roller-coaster season, but the girls came together when they needed to, said Erin Shaw, who coaches the team along with Ashley Delvecchio. Were proud of the way that they stuck together.
In a game of mini-runs by each team, Westport had the one that mattered the most. Fairfield led 31-30 with 1:47 left before Meehan put Westport ahead with a basket with 1:40 remaining. After a Fairfield turnover, Meehan scored again with 52 seconds left to put Westport up by three.
This team didnt quit, Delvecchio said. I dont think the record really reflects the ability of the girls on this team. But they all came together at the end.
