It took the Westport PAL sixth-grade girls basketball team three quarters to get its offensive untracked in Sunday's game against Weston. Once it did, however, there was no looking back for the undefeated team.
Westport outscored Weston, 15-2, in the final period Sunday at Greens Farms Academy to earn a 25-15 win and improve to 6-0 on the season. Westport is the only undefeated team in the B Division of the Fairfield County Basketball League .
"I think the Christmas break got to us a little bit,'' coach Mo Deegan said. "We just had such a long time without playing a game, and that really affected us."
Sophie Hunt and Grace McGinley had four points apiece in the fourth quarter for Westport. It trailed 5-4 after one, 11-6 at halftime and 13-10 after three. But the team scored two baskets in the first minute of the fourth quarter to pull ahead and went up 19-13 before Weston got its only basket of the quarter with two minutes to play. McGinley scored eight points and was also a factor inside with her defense and rebounding. Hunt and Rachel Seideman had four points apiece. Charlotte Rossi played well on defense and directed the Westport offense.
"What I like about this team is they're aggressive and they're fully committed to the team,'' said Deegan, a former player for coach Ed Huydic at Staples. "They're fully committed to the team."
Westport takes a break from action this weekend for the Martin Luther King holiday. It returns to action Jan. 21 at Greens Farms against New Milford in a nonleague game.
