Westport 6th and 7th Grade Basketball Results

Westport PAL 6th Grade Girls

The Westport PAL 6th grade girls travel basketball team scored two more victories last week, to raise its record to 12-3 (9-2 in division), solidifying its position in second place in the FCBL’s Girls 6A division.

On Sunday, 6G and coaches Mike Connors and Tim Taylor hope to complete the regular season and celebrate the school vacation break with a victory when they travel to meet Bethel 6G.

Westport PAL 6G also split its two games last weekend, traveling to and defeating Weston 7G (31-12) before being defeated by a deep and talented Norwalk 7G team.

Westport PAL 7th Grade Girls

The Westport PAL 7th grade girls travel basketball team hopes to build momentum in its three final regular season games before the "B" Division playoffs start in March.

Westport will host Stamford Blue before traveling to meet Ridgefield on Sunday. Following the school vacation 7G will finish its regular season by traveling to meet Redding-Easton 7G.

Westport PAL 7th Grade Boys

The Westport PAL seventh-grade boys travel basketball team had a busy three-game weekend. The 7B team picked up a win on Friday, but dropped a doubleheader on Sunday.

On Friday, 7B hosted and defeated a very athletic New Canaan team, 49-45.  Ben Casparius came up big, leading the team in scoring and rebounding, while Kenny Brill had a key 3 pointer and foul shot near the end of the game to stem a late New Canaan rally. On defense, Sean Pritchett helped keep New Canaan’s leading scorer in check while Cayne Mandell helped run the fast break and beat a tricky 1-3-1 New Canaan trapping zone defense.

On Sunday, 7B fell to a towering Danbury team, 62-47. After going down by double digits into the second quarter, 7B launched a comeback to close the deficit to just a three points at halftime. Danbury was able to pull away in the second half.

Justin Seideman had a breakout game as the leading scorer, including a successful half-court heave to close the first half. Ben Casparius was also an offensive force from outside and in the low post. Matty Fair was a defensive stopper and very strong off the boards.

With little time to recover, 7B traveled back from Danbury in time for a Sunday evening trip to meet Carver-Center Norwalk. Despite the quick turnaround, 7B’s effort was strong but the team from Norwalk dealt Westport a heart-breaking loss, 40-39.

Norwalk’s center blocked a last-second shot by Westport to save the game and hand 7B the loss. Schemel had a strong shooting game, scoring multiple 3-pointers against Norwalk’s zone defense. Mack Muller led the scoring from the post. Brendan Massoud matched up against some giants and was a defensive and rebounding force, while Ryan Fitton swept the offensive and defensive backboards clean as the leading rebounder.

7B looks to rebound from last weekend’s disappointment before the school vacation when it host’s Weston Gold 7B this Friday. Following the break, 7B will complete its regular season by traveling to meet Wilton 7B on February 26.
