WESTPORT, Conn -- The Westport 6 North Wreckers once again found themselves in a defensive show down. Up in Wilton on Wednesday night a 0-0 tie in regulation time, was settled by a Kansas City Shootout format in overtime. And when the smoke cleared, it was the Wreckers standing in with the 6-0 victory.
The Westport defense sent an early message that they were not about to be pushed around, when they ended an early Wilton drive on fourth down and inches. Knowing that the sneak was coming, Alec Burns, Robert Wehmhoff, Owen Skinner and William Grotto shot off the line. They closed off the gaps leaving Wilton nowhere to go but straight into a brick wall blue jerseys. The offense tried to feed off that energy with Max Lonergan, Harris Levi and Brandon Adrian trying to find yardage off the edges and up the middle. Westport was able to find gains through the air when Jack Beck was able to connect with Clayton Crouch for 15 yards. Jasper Fowle snatched a rope from Lonergan in the right flat that tacked on 20 yards as well. But the Wilton defense buckled down and held off the Wrecker charge, keeping the game scoreless.
The second half ticked along just as the first with yardage coming at a high premium. Shane Rabacs, Max Pappas, Trevor Williams, Lucas Henderson, Jackson Valente and Ryan Burg chased down runners and closed off running lanes leaving Wilton with few options in their game plan.
The overtime was settled in the Kansas City Shootout format, allowing each team a possession on the 10-yard line. The Wreckers got the ball first and tested the middle right away with Adrian and Crouch. Those two plays help set up a third down pass completion where Beck slipped off the line and get open in the left flat. Lonergan wasted no time and delivered a strike between the numbers and Beck was able to push the ball inside the 1-yard line. On fourth down the offensive line delivered and Lonergan was able to punch the ball in.
Wilton then got its chance, but the Westport defense shut the door with determination and sealed the victory.
