WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport PAL fifth-grade girls basketball team has gotten off to a strong start with a record of 6-5 in the Fairfield County Basketball League 5A division.
Coached by Andrew Lipman and assistant coach Joahanna McNeils, the squad includes Gabby Bromberg, Charlotte Cohen, Ellen Fair, Emma Lipman, Sydney Panzer, Madison Phelps, Claudia Robinson, Kate Rutter, Alexandra Sprouls, Catherine Sprouls, Ashley Wright and Kate Zaritsky.
Westport played a tight game against undefeated Norwalk on Sunday before falling, 19-16. Norwalk took a big lead, but Westport rallied and narrowed the score to 17-16 in the fourth quarter. Norwalk hit a pair of free throws to seal the win, spoiling a strong effort by the Westport girls.
The fifth-graders travel to Ridgefield to play St. Marys on Saturday and host Wilton on Sunday.
Westports seventh-grade girls team has a 6-6 record in the 7B division. Westport police officers Ashley Delvecchio and Erin Shaw coach a team of returning players including Julia Brower, Amelia Hunt, Grace McGinley, Claire Meehan, Charlotte Rossi and Rachel Seideman. They have been joined by energetic first-time teammates Virginia Gehrig, Morgan McWhirter and Olivia Troy.
After a tough loss to St. Marys-Ridgefield at home last Friday, 7G will try to get back in the win column this Friday with a home game against Trumbull. Saturday, 7G travels to play Greenwich Boys & Girls 7G.
