WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport Little League 10-year-old All-Stars will try to advance to the championship round of the Section 1 tournament Monday. They meet North Stamford in their final pool play game in Naugatuck.
Westport stands at 2-1 in the tournament after beating Beacon Falls, 11-1, on Saturday. A victory over North Stamford would secure a berth in Wednesday's championship game. Edgewood and Westport are 2-1 in the tournament. Orange is 2-2, and North Stamford and Beacon Falls are 1-2. Westport dropped an 11-10 slugfest to Edgewood in its second game Thursday.
In Saturday's win, Westport set the tone early with a three- run first inning. Chris Drbal and Drew Rogers led off with singles, and Westport rolled from there. It scored three in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth to clinch the mercy-rule win.
Drbal, Rogers and Alex Reiner had two hits apiece. Chad Knight pitched into the fourth inning, and Drbal closed it out.
"That was a great bounce back win for us,'' manager Tim Rogers said. "The boys were really down after the loss to Edgewood, knowing that they didn't play up to par. They really showed a lot of character getting out of the gate strong and putting away a tough Beacon Falls team."
Westport has scored 42 runs in three tournament games, It could even secure the No. 1 seed with a win. "Our bats were alive tonight and really have been all tournament. Tonight, we were able to bring our defense back to where we like it, which, coupled with good pitching, made for a nice outcome."
