WESTON, Conn. Westons Jon Pressman will be honored as the Weston Sports Person of the Year at the seventh annual Fairfield County SportsNight dinner Oct. 17 at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich.
Pressman has been the driving force in building the Weston soccer community both on and off the pitch.
One of his major accomplishments is taking the nucleus of an idea to develop an adult soccer program in Weston and molding it into the Weston Adult Soccer League, which has had 170 adults ranging in ages from 18 to 85 participating in soccer leagues over the past 12 months. The league offers fall, winter and spring programs in addition to an eight-week summer league with six teams that include a mixture of Weston High School, college and adult players.
Pressmans organizational skills led him to virtually single-handedly organize a Memorial Day Soccer Event to raise funds for the St. Baldricks Foundation, which conducts research for the treatment of childhood cancers. Pressman did that on behalf of an adult players son who had been diagnosed with leukemia. The idea came to fruition through Pressmans inspiration and determination.
Pressman has also raised money for other community needs and has given his time and expertise to the basketball, cross country and track and field programs in Weston.
The newest members of the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame and 15 Sports Persons of the Year from county communities will be recognized. Sports personalities slated to attend include former Yankees pitcher Tommy John; ex-New York Giants football player Bob Hyland; Lowes Moore, who played with the New Jersey Nets; former world boxing champion Travis Simms; and Wes Matthews, a two-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers.
