Savage, a senior, cleared 11 feet, 11 inches Tuesday. That broke by an inch the record set by Darien’s Robin Bone in 2010. While it was well behind Savage’s state record jump of 12 feet, 7 inches she set last Thursday, she was happy she established a new meet mark.
“I wanted to go a little bit higher, but I’m just tired,’’ Savage said. “It has been a long couple of days.”
Savage shattered the state record with her jump at the Class S meet. She cleared 12 feet, 2 inches at the New Balance Games Jan. 26. She has been competing frequently since then, and also participating in the high jump and long jump. Tuesday night, it finally seemed to wear her down. Once she set the meet mark on her third try, she packed it in for the night.
“My main goal is to get to the top five at the nationals,’’ Savage said, referring to the New Balance Indoor Nationals next month in New York. “I wasn’t my best tonight. I really just wanted to set the record. I felt like I was a little bit off.”
Savage’s leap of 12-7 is ranked eighth best in the nation, according to the website MileSplit.com.
Weston, which finished second to Bloomfield in Class S, had another solid night at the Open. The Trojans finished 13th with 11 points, with its other point coming with a sixth place finish in the 4 x 800 relay. Rhemi Toth, Alexa Werner, Olivia Watson and Jane Wall ran 9:41.69, more than two seconds ahead of its seeded time.
Weston was seventh in the sprint medley, and Sara Dietzman took seventh in the long jump. Chloe Shapiro was ninth in the high jump.
