Weston's girls tennis team made quick work of Old Saybrook in the quarterfinals of the Class S girls tennis tournament Wednesday. Then again, Weston seems to make quick work of nearly everyone when it comes to state competition.
Weston, which has not lost since 2006, won its 84th straight match with a 7-0 rout of Old Saybrook at the Weston courts. No. 1 singles Kimmy Guerin won 6-0, 6-0 over Alissa Rothman to set the stage for Weston, 18-0. Third singles Rebecca Zhu also won, 6-0, 6-0 as did the No. 1 doubles team of Marie Gargiulo and Emma Samson. Zoe Valella and Kate Gross also won singles matches. Aly Ashmore and Caroline Toutougni teamed up to win at second doubles and Jessy Gersh and Morgan Murray won third doubles. Weston dropped just six games in seven sets.
"I was out here earlier and thought we'd have some tough competition,'' Weston coach Mary Ann Vorvis said. "Obviously by the scores, it was quite easy."
The Trojans take their four-year winning streak into Thursday's semifinals. The Trojans have won three straight titles and appear destined for a fourth. "They don't even think about (the streak),'' Vorvis said. "It's one match at a time from here on in. I don't know if the players look ahead, but I just like going one day at a time. I still get nervous."
Many of Weston's players compete individually in USTA events, but they also work together as a team. During the winter, the players practiced together in preparation for the upcoming season. "They have a good time together,'' Vorvis said. "We'll have some players in the State Open next week, but the one they want to win is right now."
