WESTON, Conn. Weston High boys basketball coach Mike Hvizdo did not mince words after Tuesdays 67-41 loss to Notre Dame of Fairfield in a SouthWest Conference game at Weston.
That was our worst performance of the year, the first-year coach said. I dont get mad about missed shots or mistakes. I get ticked off when people dont hustle or play with heart. Nobody had any of those things tonight, so Im very upset.
Weston (6-4 overall, 3-3 in the league) jumped out to a 10-3 lead, using a zone defense to stifle the Lancers early. Weston still led, 10-7, after the first quarter. But Notre Dame went on a 10-0 run to take a 20-12 lead in the second quarter and was up 27-16 at halftime. The Lancers put the game away with a 15-2 run in the first 3:49 of the second half for a commanding 42-18 advantage.
There was no vocal leadership, Hvizdo said. You cant be good at what you do without a leader. It was a pathetic effort.
Max Molinsky scored 12 points for Weston, and Evan Blitzer added 10. It was the third straight loss for the Trojans, who are 2-4 after winning their first four games of the season. Weston misses Lyle Mitchell and Troy Flynn, two starters who are out with injuries.
It shouldnt be an excuse, Hvizdo said. We have a deep team. If kids arent going to step up, were going in the wrong direction. No disrespect to Notre Dame, but I think we could beat them. They did what they had to do, and theyre missing players, too. Theres no reason we couldnt have with this game with the crew that we had.
Weston has a nonleague game Thursday at Harding and returns to conference competition against Brookfield next Tuesday. Hvizdo is looking for answers. Maybe Ive been too lenient with some things, the coach said. We have to get back to playing the way were capable.
