Westons boys lacrosse teams cruised into the Class S championship game Wednesday with a 11-4 victory over Stonington in the semifinals at Brien McMahon. The Trojans will meet St. Joseph of Trumbull in Saturdays championship game.
Jack Scheufele, Lyle Mitchell, Brian Rogers and Morgan Faller scored two goals apiece for Weston, which trailed 1-0 after Stoningtons Jeffrey Pearce scored with 9:15 left in the first quarter.
From there it was all Weston. The Trojans scored the next four goals, including three in a one-minute span beginning with 3:36 left in the first quarter. After Rogers tied with 5:02 remaining, Eddie Hutchins scored with 3:36 left to give Weston the lead for good. Robbie Cordisco scored with 2:45 left and Faller followed nine seconds later. Evan Kleban also tallied for Weston.
Im happy for the kids, Weston coach John Mathews said. Its the ultimate goal. We havent won since 2007, and its my first opportunity. We were a little sloppy and we have to play better.
Weston received a nice game from goalie Ale Peyreigne, who made eight saves. He was particularly sharp in the first half when the game was still competitive. Im more happy with the four than I am the 11, Mathews said. Our defense has been good all year, and we try to hold teams under five goals.
