Weston Highs girls track team won its sixth straight South-West Conference championship Monday night at Bethel High School. This one may have been its most unlikely.
Kara Bucaro won the 800 and the 1,600 and ran a leg on the winning 4 x 400 relay for the Trojans, who compiled 108.25 points. They needed a late rally to overtake Joel Barlow High School, which led for most of the meet. Weston picked up 19 points in the triple jump, including a win in the event by Sarah Dietzman. The 4 x 400 brought home a victory for the team of Callie Arlo, Sydney Allon, Bucaro and anchor leg Callie Martin. It was the meet's final event, and when the scores were announced, the Weston girls screamed with delight.
It was a great comeback, coach Matt Medve said. We got 19 points in the triple jump and 20 in the pole vault. They worked hard all year. Im real proud of them.
Bucaro had a meet to remember. The senior won the 800 and 1,600, running courageous final laps in each to pull ahead in the final 300 meters. Thats a testament about what hard work can do, Medve said. She had a phenomenal day.
Weston also dominated in the pole vault. Erica Litvak won with a leap of 11 feet, 0 inches. She narrowly missed at 11 feet, 6 ½ inches, which would have erased the meet record set last year by former teammate Emily Ando.
Weston lost during the regular season to Joel Barlow and Pomperaug to finish with a 12-2 record. With just two events remaining Monday night, the Trojans trailed both teams. But led by Dietzmans win in the triple jump and the victorious 4 x 400 relay, they overcome the deficit to repeat as league champions.
