Five Weston High School seniors got an emotional sendoff in their last home meet Tuesday against Joel Barlow High School. Like so many other times in their four-year careers for the Trojans, Karen Bottger, Lauren Garner, Ali Bertan, Paige Goldstein and Georgia Flynn went out as winners.
Barlow won just one of the 12 events, and Weston used its superior depth to win the South West Conference regular season finale, 99-81. Weston finishes the regular season at 6-3-2. The swimmers now get ready for the most important meets of the season, including the SWC championships, the Class S state meet and the State Open.
"We finished OK," coach Tom Grace said. "The two ties we shouldn't have had, but the girls are where they need to be at this point in the season."
Katie Angelidis had a big day, winning a pair of individual events and swimming on two victorious relays. Bottger also won two events and anchored the winning 400-free relay. Other individual winners for Weston included Dacia Gross (50 free), Julia DiMarco (diving), Lauren Garner (100 free) and Brenna Nimkoff (100 breaststroke).
Grace's teams have a history of excelling in the postseason. In the last four years, Weston has finished in the top four in the Class S championships, including winning the 2006 title. "There are not any huge concerns at this point,'' Grace said. "The biggest one is to make sure every one stays healthy. We had some health issues early in the year, but everyone's healthy now. I think we're in a good spot."
