Weston Boys, Girls Take 7th in State Open Skiing

WESTON, Conn. – The Weston High boys and girls ski teams both finished seventh overall in the season-ending state championships Wednesday at Mouth Southington.

The girls finished fourth in Class S. They were also 10-7 on the season and 6-4 in their division. Freshman Shelby Merberg led the team, finishing fourth on the mountain out of 90 skiers at the Open. Anna Dickstein (34th), Kelly Quinn (37th), Ava van Daalen (39th), Katherine Marra (48th) and Alex Fontaine (58th) rounded off Weston’s top six.  

Weston’s boys finished second in Class S. They also earned the South-West Conference championship and finished with a 16-6 overall record and 8-1 in their division. The junior varsity boys went  21-1.

The boys were led in the state meet by David Gardell, who finished 33rd in the field of 120 skiers. Jon Buddenhagen (37th), Chase Pomeranz (46th), Peter Robbins (47th), Andrew Gardell, (48th) David Gardell (49th) and Will Coates rounded out Weston’s team.

Staples girls won the State Open, followed by Fairfield and Ridgefield. Fairfield captured the boys title, followed by Fairfield Prep and Wilton. The only Class S team to finish ahead of Weston was Wilton in the boys race. Joel Barlow, Wilton and Berlin edged the Weston girls for Class S honors.
