For three quarters Sunday, Weston's sixth-grade girls basketball team appeared poised to pull off a stunning upset against undefeated Westport. But an offensive dry spell in the final period proved to be Weston's undoing.
Westport outscored Weston 13-2 in the final quarter Sunday at Greens Farms Academy to post a 23-15 victory in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Weston led 5-4 after one quarter, 11-6 at halftime and 13-10 after three quarters before Westport rallied. Westport scored two quick baskets in the first minute of the fourth quarter to take a 14-13 lead and never looked back. Lily Butt's basket for Weston ended a 9-0 Westport run with two minutes left in the game, but Westport held on.
"They picked up their defense and we really had trouble finding an answer for their 2-3 zone,'' Weston coach Sean Welsh said. "Overall, we had a good effort. We competed really well and they played hard the entire game."
Cayla Koch scored five points to lead Weston, while Lily had four. Weston fell to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the FCBL. The team threw a scare into undefeated Westport, which is the only undefeated squad in the FCBL sixth-grade girls B Division.
"It was fun knowing that we can play at that level,'' Welsh said. "I told the girls they have a lot to be proud of. We try to teach the girls how to play good defense. We just need more experience on the offensive side of the ball."
