Undefeated Wreckers to Clash With Darien

WESTPORT, Conn. - The dream scenario that Fairfield County football fans were hoping for since the season began has arrived. Darien and Staples High School are both undefeated heading into Saturday's 10:30 a.m. showdown. The winner will likely be on the fast track to the conference championship.

When the schedules were released, the potential for the game popped off the page even in the middle of the summer. It could be two unbeaten teams playing for a shot at the conference championship. It could be a classic. Guess what? It's here. It's real. Buckle up. This game is going to be one to remember.

Darien head coach Rob Trifone said he knows exactly what the stakes are for his young team. "We've made some mistakes and we've done well for a young team," he said. "But the fun's over. Now we're playing to go to the big dance."

Both teams are undefeated with Darien sitting at 6-0 and Staples at 5-0. Both teams feature underclassmen quarterbacks in their first full year as starters in sophomore Jack Massie (Staples) and junior Henry Baldwin (Darien). Both have breakout running backs leading their respective team's offense in Joey Zelkowitz (Staples) and Peter Gesualdi (Darien). And yes, the winner will most likely be heading to the conference championship.

That's still not enough drama for you? Mother Nature is getting in on the act too with a cold rain forecasted with the possibility of some snow creeping in before the game is over.

On this week's episode of Main Street Connect's " FCIAC Football Fast Five ," analyst Kevin Jones said this game will not only be the game of the week, but the game of the year. And the weather only adds to how memorable the game will be.

"Wet, sloppy, gross - these are all things we love football games to be," Jones said. "Both teams have proven they can survive in tight games, both have proven they can score points and both have proven they can play in big games."
