After decades of trying, four permanent field lights were finally installed on the football field at Staples High School in July. Since at least 1978, attempts have been made to install permanent lights on the football field. In 2009, the town approved a proposal for permanent field lights, but a group of neighbors appealed that decision in court.
The lawsuit ended in November 2011 when the town backed an agreement with the neighbors. In March, the Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a site plan and special permit for the lights, which was filed by the Board of Education.
Private community donations paid for installation of the lights.
On Sept. 14, the Staples High School varsity football team had its first Friday night game under the lights.
The lights will be used for weekday games and practices from September through December until 8 p.m. They can also be used for eight athletic special events, which include Friday night games, during the year until 10 p.m. and for two Saturday events.
