WESTPORT, Conn. -- Three Westport PAL basketball teams have advanced to championship games in the Fairfield County Basketball League . The championship games in each division will be played this weekend.
Westport PAL 5B: After finishing tied for fourth in the league's Boys 5A division, Westport began its playoff run with a 47-22 victory over New Milford.
In the semifinals, Westport nipped Ridgefield in overtime, 54-53.
Westport will meet Madison in the championship game on Saturday at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Westport is 14-9 on the season under coach Shuan Malone. Westport beat Madison, 43-39, on Feb. 12.
Westport PAL 7G: After an up and down regular season that had it finishing in the middle of the pack of the league's B division, Westport began its title run with a 44-17 win over Brookfield.
With a see-saw first half that had each team inching ahead by not more than four points, the teams went to halftime tied. The halftime adjustments and motivational words from coaches Ashley Delvecchio and Erin Shaw worked as Westport asserted its height and speed advantages in the second half, putting together its best 16 minutes of basketball of the season to pull away for a comfortable win.
Westport upset Ridgefield in the semifinals, 35-24. After falling to Ridgefield by ten points just two weeks ago, the Westport girls played well in the first half and took a one-point halftime lead.
In the second half, the defensive focus of Julia Brower, Morgan McWhirter and Olivia Troy, along with the strong rebounding from Virginia Gehrig, Claire Meehan and Grace McGinley and the scoring punch from Charlotte Rossi, Amelia Hunt and Rachel Seideman, led to the upset.
Westport (13-10) plays the Fairfield PAL Mercury on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Weston High School for the division championship.
Westport PAL 8G: Westport 8G and coach Chris Scholz's perseverance and persistence during an injury-filled regular season has produced a remarkably satisfying playoff run and a berth in the Girls B division final.
Westport opened the playoffs with a 40-32 win over New Canaan in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Westport pulled away from St. Mark-Stratford, 32-19.
That victory put Westport in Sunday's championship game against Danbury. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Danbury High School.
