Gaelic Football is one of the most popular sports in Ireland and draws thousands of fans each week during the season. The fast-paced field game is played with 15 people on each team and can best be described as a combination of rugby, soccer and basketball. The ball is slightly smaller than a basketball and can be carried only four steps during play. It must then be either kicked, thrown or bounced in order to move further up the field. The hour-long game can be won by scoring in the soccer-like net for three points or through a rugby-like goalpost for one point.

The Irish Festival, which will take place on Fairfield University's campus, will have several Gaelic Football games including a high school exhibition and a senior game. This weekend is a great chance to watch the exciting, traditional Irish sport or enjoy one of the many other activities that the Festival has to offer.

Along with Gaelic Football, there will be Irish dancing, music, homemade food and beverages in celebration of Irish heritage. FEILE, a public charity which aims to foster an appreciation and celebration of Irish culture, will be sponsoring the event and will award three students with a $2,000 scholarship.

This weekend is a great chance to become enriched in a proud culture through games, music, art and more. The festival will be held on Friday, June 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., Saturday, June 18 from 12:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 19 from 12:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission is $12 a day or $20 for a weekend pass.
