FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Whether it’s running, swimming or riding, or even a combination of the three, there are plenty of opportunities for recreational athletes in Fairfield County this weekend.

In Norwalk, there is a road race and a kids triathlon on Saturday, and a sprint distance triathlon on Sunday. Westport offers a road race on Saturday, and a swimming event on Sunday. There is also a trail race on Saturday in Redding, and a swimming event on Saturday in Greenwich.

Children ages 4-14 will be among the first to take the starting line Saturday at 8 a.m. in the Mini Mossman Youth Triathlon at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. Race distances vary by age. The oldest age group, ages 11-14, will swim 200 yards, bike four miles and run one mile. Registration information is available online.

The children’s race is run in conjunction with the Mossman Sprint Triathlon, which starts Sunday at 6:30 a.m. at Calf Pasture. The event is one of the first triathlons in the region, and the sprint distance – a half-mile swim, 12.5-mile bike and 3.1 mile run, makes it popular for new athletes. Find out more about the race online.

A seven-mile race also starts on Saturday at 8 a.m. in Norwalk at Brien McMahon High School. The race is the third of five in the Lightfoot Runners Summer Series. Norwalk’s Julie Heaphy has won the first two races in the women’s division. More info is available online.

Luke McCambley is on a similar winning streak in Westport, where he has won the first two races of the Westport Summer Series. The third race in the 10-race series is a 3.8-mile run starting at Longshore at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Runners who want to try something different can try the Your Endurance Sports trail run at Huntington State Park in Redding on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. The races include a 5k and a 10k. More information is available online.

Swimmers can compete in the Greenwich Point one-mile swim on Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m. More information is available from Threads 'n’ Treads. On Sunday, the Westport Weston Family Y’s 34th annual Point-to-Point Compo Beach Swim begins at 8 a.m. The race is one of the longest-running recreational events in the area, and covers one mile with a sprint across sand at the race finish. More information is available on the Westport Y website.
